Alone Poem
In my models I was trying to focus light down in certain areas to give the simulation to focus on yourself. With the openings, elements and cut outs in the walls, I was trying to get the person reading the poem to think about the other situations around them. In model 1, I putting the bench facing the thick wall with small cut out. I was trying to get the impression that you need to focus on yourself before you can help others. Then with the open space, I tried to get people who are in this area to take in whats going on around them. With the elements, I was trying to get the impression of pieces of a bigger picture that you can't fully see.

Alone

Alone
Lying, thinking
Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Maya Angelou
I selected the poem Alone by Maya Angelou because I thought it had the most visual aspects to it. I really enjoyed the way the poem starts. It places you in a place of the unknown. The way it is worded makes your mind almost seem that you’re in this certain state of mind. A place where you have to look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself if you are doing enough to help others.
The beginning of this poem opens with the statement (Lying, thinking /Last night /How to find my soul a home). The author is trying to get you in a place of deep thought. You are alone and can only think about yourself and your morals and ethics. The following statement which I think is the most important: (Where water is not thirsty/And bread loaf is not stone/ I came up with one thing /And I don’t believe I’m wrong /That nobody,/ But nobody/ Can make it out here alone). Maya Angelou seems to be trying to get the point out right away that nobody in this would can really live without anyone with them. With all the money in the world can’t by you happiness; you have to have friends and family with you.. Then the following statement (Their wives run round like banshees/ Their children sing the blues/ They’ve got expensive doctors/ To cure their hearts of stone). People seem to have no mercy on others. They do not care about how their own actions may affect the lives of other people around them. The sum of this poem is that if people work together and help one another then we can make it in this world.

I, Too

I, Too, Sing America by Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--
I, too, am America.
I selected the poem I, Too by Langston Hughes because I thought it had a lot of emotion behind. I liked the fact that he put his point so bluntly in his poem. The way it is put together it forces the reader to slow down and really read the poem. It doesn’t have as many visual aspects to it as Alone by Maya Angelou, but it has the emotion behind it to bring it to life.
What I think that most impressive about this poem is how blunt he is at the very beginning of his poem. (I am the darker brother/ They send me to eat in the kitchen). This shows the discrimination that blacks suffered from whites at the time he wrote this poem. That he knows that there’s going to be a day that he won’t have to sit in another area or in this case the kitchen. There will be a day that he will get to have the same opportunity as the whites. They won’t look down on him, but on the same leave as everyone else. There is no reason for him to be ashamed of the color of his skin. I really liked how he ended his poem that “I, too, am American” and that makes him the same as everyone else in America.
