Final Paper

Alone by Maya Anglou

I selected the poem Alone by Maya Anglou, I thought it had the most visual aspects to it. The way it the poem portrayed you in an unknown place but familiar to all. I wanted a space that was familiar to all but also unknown. The beginning of this poem opens with the statement (Lying, thinking/Last night/ How to find my soul a home). I wanted an area in my space that was set aside for a person to be to themselves--to have a space that was closed off in feeling but open in reality. So by putting my seating in a S space, I have an open area and a closed off area in scene. (Where water is not thirsty/And bread loaf is not stone/ I came up with one thing /And I don’t believe I’m wrong /That nobody,/ But nobody/ Can make it out here alone). With my space, I made lots of openings, that you could see out in different directions. By having these openings I am playing with light coming in at different directions. So I wanted nature to be involved in my design for my space inside, and out.
Then with the other statement (Their wives run round like banshee/ Their children sing the blues/ They’ve got expensive doctors/ To cure their hearts of stone). In my space I placed openings to view the outside world around you while you are focusing on yourself. In this space I wanted people to be able to learn from the outer surroundings when they are finding what they need to improve in themselves. By listening and seeing how other people handle situations
With the wall that has two lines of elements that have openings but feels closed off. I did that to show the aspect of the poem I think is the most important. When Anglou says “no body, but nobody can make it out here alone” she is trying to convey that no one should close themselves up from the outside world. We need to observe and be with other people to get though this life. Sometimes we need some time to ourselves to consider our morals and ethics in life. When we are not doing that we need to be with other people and helping each other in the best ways we know how. That is why I was so focus on making areas light and dark. Life has both light and dark areas, its’ that way we handle these times is what makes us how we are.
